ENGL 808: Technology and Literacy

This is my group's literacy definition:

What is literacy?

Literacy is the knowledge and understanding of a set of socially constructed set of values, beliefs, and practices in a given context. Literacy, as a term, is not only a linguistic skill based instrument alone but relies on operational use: To be a part of the institution, gain capital, discourse you’re surrounded by.

What is illiteracy?

Illiteracy is not being able to work with assumptions, skills, and higher level understanding of that literacy. You are illiterate wherever you cannot participate in the social construction of that literacy.

What are the characteristics of a literate person?

Be able to communicate orally, written, and non-verbal; use the skills (i.e. tasks, technologies, tools, discursive practices) of that discourse; subjective to time and place; nondisruptive nature.
